Strains of Cannabis

Medical Cannabis comes in two basic types: Sativa and Indica. Each type has its own set of distinct characteristics. The effectiveness of Cannabis is directly related to the strain being used. Science is beginning to identify particular strains that are good for sleep, pain, appetite, and energy, as well as for specific conditions and symptoms.

Cannabis Indica

The medicating effect of the Indica is predominantly physical. They are characterized as relaxing, sedating, heavy, lethargic and pain reducing. They are also excellent at relieving stress. (ie. Purple Kush) The smoke is dense and can induce a cough.

Cannabis Sativa

The effect of Sativa is often characterized as cerebral, uplifting, thoughtful and energetic. They are characterized as having a strong psychological component giving feelings of well-being, focus and creativity. (ie. Malawi Gold) The smoke is sweet, spicy or fruity.

Hybrids

Strain crosses, or hybrids, are the result of cross-pollination of various strains. The characteristics of the strains are not equal, so the effects of one strain will be stronger than the other. For example, indica-dominant crosses are good for pain relief, with the sativa component helping with appetite stimulation (ie. A-Train). Sativa-dominant crosses are good for stimulating appetite, with the indica component helping with relaxation and reduced stress (ie. OG Kush).

With the many combinations and complex pairings of modern hybrids, it is impossible to generalize about the qualities of effects. It is suggested that patients keep a record of their own experience with medicating. Tracking strain, dosage, method of delivery, time of day and place will all help determine what works best for them.
